Training in traditional ballet technique and styles, including RAD base and methods developed by Balanchine. Classical ballet, places great emphasis on the method and execution of movement. The foundation consists of basic positions.  Contemporary instructors are skilled in various styles of classical ballet, with a fusion of ballet styles to create stronger dancers, emphasizing injury free training. The techniques found in classical ballet are a framework for many other styles of dance,  Pointework is available for higher level students. Contemporary’s ballet syllabus is implemented and followed.

Contemporary Ballet

(Adult & Teens)

Contemporary ballet is a form of dance influenced by both classical ballet, modern and jazz dance. It takes its technique and use of pointework from classical ballet, although it permits a greater range of movement that may not adhere to the strict body lines set forth by classical  ballet technique.  Classical ballet training is needed in order to learn contemporary ballet.

Contemporary Dance/Modern

Grounded movement focusing on the contraction and release of the center of the body, and the body’s reaction to such movements.  There are various styles in modern dance and Contemporary incorporates these focusing on levels of movement from floor work to standing and jumping,  contraction and release of the body, rotation of the spine and use of the back, achieving sound alignment while building strength, agility, coordination, balance and control.

Jazz

Stylized theatrical dance incorporating rhythms and fast footwork; a Jazz technique syllabus is implemented and followed as well.

Lyrical Jazz

Grooves

A hip-hop dance class formed around grooving, dancing in pocket, and feeling the music. It will feature repetition, drilling, and follow-alongs on an intermediate/advanced level to insure students are increasing knowledge in hip-hop movement and vocabulary. It is also an extreme exercise keeping the heart rate up, and forcing you to not think because you’re too focused on breathing. Let the sweat drip, and feel the music.

Tap

Articulation of the feet incorporating steps and rhythms; develops coordination, rhythm, and musicality.

Knaiseff Floor Barre

KNAISEFF (KNYAZEV) FLOOR BARRE The Boris Knaiseff Floor Barre technique sculpts and refines the body; it is a holistic approach to connect and center the mind, body, and breath for dance. And it is well suited for those with injuries that would prevent participating in a regular class. The exercise sequences are simple and easy to follow, yet thorough. No special equipment is needed, not even a yoga mat. Do wear socks or ballet shoes to allow for sliding the feet on the floor. Tights, yoga pants, or other comfortable attire is also helpful to protect the skin and allow for easier sliding on the floor, as well as having the back covered. A tee shirt works well. Do bring a towel to fold and place under the pelvis when lying face down. This technique is performed sitting or lying on the floor. It is the ideal position for establishing dynamic alignment. It is especially designed for ballet technique, but all dancers derive benefit from the exercises! Most of the exercises are designed to be performed while lying on the back, and then repeated face down. KNAISEFF BIO: Knaiseff studied at the St. Petersburg Theater School, and began teaching in Paris in 1924. He was the first person to include en dedans movements as part of the training. One of his followers, Stella Voskovetskaya, a Vaganova Academy graduate, incorporated many elements of the Knaiseff floor barre directly into the Vaganova system. This technique is unique and we are so excited to have it as part of the Adult program!
