Boogie Woogie Christmas Carol

CBD continues its 15th season of concert dance with Boogie Woogie Christmas Carol on Saturday, December 12, 2015, 7:30pm, at McFarlin Memorial Auditorium on the SMU Campus.  Jump, Jive & Jingle all the way as we invite you to “swing” into the Christmas season with a fresh look at Charles Dickens' classic tale!  Artistic Director Valerie Shelton Tabor brings a hip update to this loved holiday tale.  Join the professional company and select students for Dallas’ newest favorite holiday tradition!

Putting us in the Christmas mood, the story is told through classic and current swing and jazz music, including that of The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Judith Owen and Tommy Dorsey.   Music by the Trammps and a disco “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” take Scrooge back to the 1970’s with the Ghost of Christmas Past.  Scrooge travels with the Ghosts through the present and into the grim future with a musical collage including artists Harry Connick, Jr., Evanescence & Florence & The Machine, to name a few.

Brandon McGee reprises his role as our favorite Bah-Hum-Bug in CBD’s 8th production of the show.  The show opens in a present-day shopping center on Christmas Eve, amid the hustle and hurry to find the perfect gifts.  While meeting the cast of characters, it becomes clear how Scrooge’s bad holiday spirit affects us all.  As part of CBD’s mission to cultivate local artists and choreographers, modern dancer Danielle Georgiou of Danielle Georgiou Dance Group (DGDG) has choreographed two sections of the story ballet.  As well, ballet mistress Anna Ward, formerly of Ballet Jeunesse, has staged the Snow Ballet.

Boogie Woogie Christmas Carol also features the restaging of an authentic 1920’s swing number, “The Big Apple,” by Dallas Swing Dance Society’s Elaine Hewlitt & Don West.  As well, students from the School of CBD fill out some of the children’s roles, such as Tiny Tim & the Cratchitt Sisters!

Charles Dickens’ tale is pertinent to everyone.  The lessons learned by Scrooge are universal and help keep us in the holiday spirit alive throughout the whole year.   A piece of humble pie and a spoonful of holiday spirit, Boogie Woogie Christmas Carol promises an eclectic evening of dance and music.
