This art form can transport you to another world; just look at the Rockettes, who put on their famous Christmas Spectacular year after year. Though the tradition, which dates back to 1933, was put on hiatus last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these talented dancers are taking the stage once more starting this month. Dallas, Texas
Lindsay DiGiuseppe, Valerie Shelton Tabor, and Kelley Calhoon founded Contemporary Ballet Dallas in 2005. At the dance company and through the guidance of professional dancers and seasoned teachers, take an eight-week adult course in beginner ballet, modern, jazz, or tap—Radio City, here you come!
New York City, New York
Some of the top companies host novice classes. Perfect your plié at the Joffrey Ballet in Manhattan. This dance school, which was founded in 1953 by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino, “continues to strive for its founders’ vision by deconstructing dance to allow dancers the ability to perfect their technique and form so it flows naturally and passionately from within. Joffrey Ballet School cultivates the individual artist within you.” In addition to learning ballet, dancers will gain skills in jazz, modern, contemporary, hip-hop, and character dance. Also try open or intro-level West African dance at Mark Morris Dance Center, in Brooklyn. There is even a progressive six-week intro series that allows beginners to gradually learn the ins and outs of a particular style of dance.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Led by Israeli-born choreographer Ronen Koresh, the Koresh Dance Company has weekly drop-in options for newbies interested in ballet, jazz, and hip-hop. The company opened in 1991, however, their school was founded in 1993. The school teaches the greater Philadelphia community in Center City, both children and adults, with over 60 class offerings every week in jazz, ballet, pointe, hip-hop, modern, and tap styles.
Seattle, Washington
The American Dance Institute’s six studios hold grown-up groove sessions in everything from flamenco to K-pop. You can even do a free trial to test out what style of dance you would like to explore.
